I used to practice at the British Ropes Social Club at 16yrs of age where I systematically worked my way through Joe Davis's book of snooker learning the basics that would stay with me through the rest of my life. The following year I was asked to Captain the club's A Team but I was all set to depart for college and education came first. Snooker took a back seat during my 3yrs at College although in 1974 I made my only significant purchase, at Jack Karnam's Billiard Parlor on Old Kent Road, I purchased a PowerGlide International 18 1/2 ounce billiard cue which is still in use today. The cue cost me £17 which was a significant chunk of my grant in those days, it is currently insured for £350.
After my 3 years at College I returned to Yorkshire and joined the police, being posted to Dewsbury. I was soon playing snooker for the police team in the Ossett and District League and continued to do so until a back injury in August 1994 brought my competitive snooker playing to a close.
During my 17 years of competition snooker, I have also represented the Force numerous times. My highest ever break is 127. AND what remains now ?? For me, the odd game of pool with my mates when my back and my neck injuries permit. Also, maybe, just maybe, one of the boys will develop an interest in the game and I can tutor them to a World title :-)
I've just found these old pictures in my archives. It was the one and only snooker competition held at Dewsbury nick in the 20 years I was there. It was 1981. I won the individuals and came runner-up in the doubles.
